How about a MAGIC SHOW? There's one thing a kid will definitely put down the phone for... LIVE MAGIC!
Now that we've been performing the Broadway Magic Hour for 2 years in at our venue in New York City's Times Square area, we've had the fortunate experience of hearing from grandparents after the show, "That was SO FUN! We've never seen our grandkids laugh so hard."
This makes us so happy, because one of our main goals with our family-friendly magic show is to bring FAMILIES together -- and that is especially true for grandparents and their grandkids.
This post was actually inspired by a wonderful email that we received from an NYC grandma yesterday. I'll copy and paste her email here:
"Hi Jim and Carl,
Feedback like that warms our hearts! (And, yes, we do introduce new material into the show from time to time!)
Carl and I are ourselves dads... my kids are both grown, but Carl has a 5-year-old. And let's face it -- kids love to play on their phones. There are so many options for them there... funny videos, interactive games, music from every corner of the earth. We get it. So HOW in the world can an adult (especially a grandparent!) offer an activity truly fun and exciting that the grandkids will want to do?
A dinosaur museum? Been there, done that.
A movie? Just about every movie ever created is in their pocket on their phone.
How about a Broadway play? Of course! That'll be $2,000 please (LOL!)
No, seriously - we hear you, and believe us... we have the solution.
Just ask your grandkids - "Hey, wanna go to a magic show?" The phones are abandoned and they are ready to go!
In the hundreds of Broadway Magic Hour shows we've done at the Broadway Comedy Club, I can honestly say we have NEVER seen a kid on their phone during the show. We don't even tell people to put their phones away... In an announcement before the show, Jason, our sound guy, says, "Here at the Broadway Magic Hour, we encourage the use of cameras. Take photos, take videos, but please do so in a way that doesn't distract others."
Oh yes- that's one other thing we love to mention... If your grandkids get called up onstage to help with a magic trick (we are calling them up constantly throughout the show), be sure to snap some photos or videos to share with family later. There is nothing quite as sweet as seeing the wide-eyed wonder of a kid floating in mid-air, or seeing something appear or disappear right before their very eyes.
1) You and your grandkids will have an experience together that none of you will ever forget. I remember seeing my first magic show at age 7, and I still get goosebumps when I remember how it made me feel to witness the impossible.
2) We won't break your budget. Tickets to the Broadway Magic Hour start at just $25, but we have different pricing options at different shows, so check out the date you want to come and see what interests you most.
3) Your heart will fill with joy seeing your little loved ones having the time of their lives. And after the show, you'll have something interesting to talk about for days to come. How did that kid FLOAT? What happened to that kid's shoe when the magicians "accidentally" burned it up? How did that handkerchief come to life and dance around all over the place? Hearing your grandkids' theories on these and other mysteries is a delight that keeps on giving, long after the show is over.
We look forward to seeing you at the show soon!
No! The Broadway Magic Hour is totally family friendly and enjoyable for all. Time Out NY rated the Broadway Magic Hour one of the "Best Off Broadway Shows for Kids and Families," so you know it's calibrated just right!
No, we pick kids from all over the showroom to come onstage and help out. The room seats 180 people, so whether your kid comes onstage to perform magic is totally "luck of the draw," but everybody has an amazing time whether they come onstage or not.
You can see the show well from anywhere in the showroom. Our performing venue is the historic Broadway Comedy Club, which has been in business for over 30 years. The room is a professional performing venue. Fun fact: You can buy "Main Room Standard" tickets and still sit near the front of the stage, if you arrive 35-45 minutes before showtime.
Absolutely. We have snacks and drinks for every taste (including "adult beverages" for adults, if you like.) There is NO drink minimum at our show.
